Newsboy Statue
58 N Last Chance Gulch, Helena, MT

As Helenans and tourists alike step onto the Downtown Walking Mall at the corner of Sixth and Last Chance Gulch, they are greeted by what’s now become a familiar face. The iconic statue of a Helena newsboy titled “Extra! Extra!” is the first thing shoppers see as they begin their journey down the mall. With his sleeves rolled up and his head topped with a classic newsboy cap, this Helena icon is frozen mid-shout, proclaiming the day’s headline “Capital City Prospers” to passersby. Sculpted by Becky Eiker in 1998 and installed in July 1999, the bronze sculpture was created as “A tribute to the faithful newsboys who sold their papers on these street corners, bringing the latest news to the people of Helena,” a commemorative plaque at his feet reads.
