The Helena area offers a few options for cross country skiing. Bill Roberts Golf Course is a flatter, in-town option, while places like MacDonald Pass and Stemple Pass will take you out into the mountains surrounding Helena.
Located 15 miles west of Helena off of Highway 12 on your way toward Elliston, “Mac Pass” offers groomed cross country ski trails. The plowed parking lot is ont he north side of the highway, about a third mile east of the highway summit. There is a toilet located one km down the trail. The Stemple Pass Ski Trails are a system of 4 basic ungroomed connected ski trail loops that provide opportunities for beginner and intermediate cross-country skiing – 2 km of easiest, 20 km of more difficult, 10 km of most difficult trail; no grooming. Parking available for 40 vehicles. Stemple Pass sits on the Continental Divide and the skier should be prepared for rapidly changing weather. An outhouse available at the trailhead, otherwise, there are no other facilities. Driving Directions: Travel south from Lincoln on Forest Road 601 (Poor Man Creek Road) approximately 16 miles south and east to Stemple Pass. Located 37 miles north of Helena.
